It’s not just homeowners along the Florida coast that experience hurricanes and extreme winds. No matter where you are located in FL, you need to protect your home and family today, before the first storm of the season even forms. At a bare minimum, you and your family need to have an evacuation plan in place. If you want to be extremely prepared, consider installing impact windows and doors from FHIA. We partner with window manufacturers that specialize in hurricane windows, like PGT and CWS. We're also created our own window line with CWS called the StormSaver window.
After a storm hits, be sure to fix your windows as soon as possible and schedule a free roof inspection to ensure that shingles aren't loose and leaks won't occur.
Hurricane Terminology & the Power of Securing Your Home
It's important to understand some important terms that you may hear in the news:
- Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible in the area. Watches are issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical storm force winds.
- Hurricane Warning: Hurricane conditions are expected in the area. Warnings are issued 36 hours in advance of tropical storm force winds.
Now that some terminology has been discussed, you should always prepare your home when a Hurricane Watch is issued. Do not wait until a Hurricane Warning is issued and be scrambling to create an evacuation plan.
Our downloadable guide will provide you with an in-depth hurricane checklist that includes what to pack within your hurricane kit. Aside from preparing your hurricane kit, consider what you need done to your home so it can last through the hurricane. For starters, secure your windows, trim all trees and shrubs, and bring in all outdoor furniture.
